Richard Hento, 70, of Mitchell, SD, died Friday, April 9, 2021, at Avera Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Friday, April 16 at First Reformed Church in Mitchell. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell. Visitation will be 5-7:00 PM Thursday at Bittner Funeral Chapel. Arrangements by Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Richard Dean Hento was born December 24, 1950 to Gus and Alice (Wiebenga) Hento. Rich grew up on the family farm south of Avon where he attended country school. He graduated from Avon High School in 1969. After high school he attended USD/S in Springfield, and graduated in 1973 with a Bachelor of Science in biology. Rich then taught and coached in Geddes and Springfield.

Rich married Mona Boeke on May 29, 1976 in Clear Lake, SD. They made their home in Mitchell all their life, except for a short time in Jamestown, ND.

After their marriage, Rich started working for Combined Insurance and then became an independent agent for the rest of his life.

He lived and breathed sports especially through his three sons’ athletic careers. Then it was onto being an avid Dakota Wesleyan University sports fan and any sports on TV. Rich was anxiously waiting to coach his two grandsons. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing, and spent many hours with his sons on the hunt or casting out the line.

Rich is survived by his wife, Mona; three sons, Kelly of Pierre, Greg (Danie), and Tim both of Mitchell; grandsons, Dreesen and Bridger; brothers, Jim (Darla) and Larry (Ruth) both of Avon; and sister, Diane of Fremont, NE.

He was preceded in death by his parents and all his aunts, uncles, and grandparents.

You are in our prayers. My husband was Rich’s Science teacher and coach at Avon HS. Great memories of a great guy. I can still remember his laugh and smile.
