Marie H. Sperlich was born June 5, 1920 to Theodore and Ella (Blum) Schumacher at her parents’ home west of Dimock. She attended rural grade school and moved with her family to a farm west of Ethan when she was ten years old. She graduated from Ethan High School and then from Notre Dame Junior College in Mitchell with a teaching degree in 1942. She taught grade school for five years in rural Douglas and Davison Counties. On May 25, 1947 she married John Sperlich at Immanuael Lutheran Church at rural Dimock. She was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church. She was an avid reader, enjoyed playing piano and became quite proficient in painting with oils.
She is survived by her five children: Gail Sperlich and wife, Carrie of Parkston, Joan Hettinger and husband, Dave of Mitchell, Karen Ludens of Black Hawk, Keith Sperlich of Parkston, and Mark Sperlich and wife, Peg of Hot Springs; six grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, five step great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John in 2006, her parents, three brothers: George, Walter and Marvin Schumacher and three sisters: Caroline, Lucille and Adele.
