John Smith Hossle was born March 5, 1936, at Malvern, IA, to Ralph Ira and Edythe Marie (Smith) Hossle. He grew up and attended school in Iowa, and moved from southwest Iowa to Burke, SD, in 1955. He was honorably discharged from the US Air Force. He attended Southern State Teachers College in Springfield and then graduated from the University of South Dakota, in Vermillion, in 1961. On February 7, 1958, he married Betty Lou Scott, at Lake Andes, SD. He taught school in Veblen, Hoven and Highmore, SD. In 1970, he moved to Burke to farm and ranch with his father until 1977, when he retired and moved to Mitchell. He had been a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Holy Family Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by his wife Betty, two children, Harlan Mark Hossle of Mitchell, Susan Lea Goettsch of Mitchell, and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
