Norina Elizabeth Grate Manthei


March 4, 1939 - March 10, 2011





     Norina "DOTTIE" Elizabeth Grate Manthei was born March 4, 1939 at Hyannis, NE to Clarence Chester and Lillian Euella (Funkhouser) Grate.  She moved with her family to South Dakota in 1951.  She married Paul Edward Manthei on June 5, 1955, and ranched at Glad Valley, SD where four of her five children were born.  In 1970 they moved to the Black Hills area where they raised their family. They moved to Mitchell in 2009.  Norina always had a love of animals and befriended all strays.  She liked to travel and made arts and crafts for herself and others.  She is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and was active in the missionary program.

      She is survived by her husband, Paul Edward Manthei; her sons, Chester Paul Manthei and wife, Cheryl of Wessington Springs, SD and Sean Dale and friend, Amber Clark of Chancellor, SD; three daughters:  Lillian Euella Manthei of Howes, SD, Clara Mae Reinert and Margaret “Maggie” Elizabeth Manthei both of Mitchell, SD; six grandsons:  Jacob Mittleider and wife, Jennifer of Spearfish, SD, Wayne Haskell II and wife, Dawn of Ellensburg, WA, Jeramiah Haskell of Mitchell, SD, Raymond Gibson and wife, Jackie of Gillette, WY, Benjamin Reinert and fiancé, Montana Rivas, of Mitchell, SD, Alexander Dale of Chancellor, SD; and step-grandchildren, Teri Main and husband, Dale of Keystone, SD, Nicole Reifers and friend, Bill of Rapid City, Chad Reifers and wife, Jeanette of Scottsdale, AZ and Judd Reifers and wife, Laura of George, IA; great- grandchildren: Destiny Rose Stone, Tiffany, Shelby, Tabitha Wisser, and Kallie Mittleider; step great grandchildren: Brenden Reifers, Colton Nielsen, Bailey, Kobe and Levi Main; Jayden and Rylee Bugenhagen; one sister, Wilma Syfie of Rapid City, SD; two brothers, John Grate and wife, Marlene of Isabel, SD and Lyle “Butch” Grate and wife, Shari of Garland, Texas; sister-in-law, Lorraine Aase of Mission Hill, SD; nephew, Bill Grate; several other nieces and nephews; and others who knew her as "Grandma Dottie".

      Norina was preceded in death by her parents; an infant brother; brother, Leo Grate; sister, Danny Gibson; brother-in-law, Ferris Syfie; grandson, Rex Cody Edward Mittleider; nephew, John Syfie; great niece Charlotte Aase; and great-nephew, James Bennett.


A Memorial Fund has been established.
