Morris J. Pommer


February 6, 1922 - April 8, 2011




Morris J. Pommer was born February 6, 1922 at Farmer, SD to John and Mary (Schutt) Pommer. He grew up and attended school near Farmer. In 1942 he joined the US Army where he was a telegraph printer during WWII and was honorably discharged in October 1945.  He then moved to Sioux Falls where he worked at the Veterans Hospital until 1952 and then moved to Farmer.  On June 5, 1949 he married Ruby Hellekson in Sioux Falls.  They farmed near Farmer until the fall of 2003 and then moved to Wesley Acres in Mitchell and then due to failing health they moved to Avera Prince of Peace in Sioux Falls.  He was a member of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church where he served on various boards, committees and was a Sunday School teacher, a member of the Fulton, Farmer, Epiphany American Legion and VFW, Central Electric, Farmers Union Co-op, Farmer School Board and coached at the Farmer School and was a basketball referee for many years.  He was an avid bowler, enjoyed all sports and going dancing and enjoyed wintering in Mesa, AZ for fourteen years.

He is survived by two sons: Gary Pommer and wife, Pam of Rapid City, John Pommer and wife, Melissa of Alexandria; two daughters: Linda Pommer and Deb Brock and husband, Doug of Sioux Falls; two grandchildren: Nicholas Brock and Ashley Pommer; three step-grandchildren: Jordan, Nicole, Kylie and one brother, Harvey Pommer of Albuquerque, NM.  He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Ruby in September 2009, three brothers: Edwin, Harold and Gene, one sister, Vera Chase and one granddaughter, Jayna Pommer.
