Gordon Raymond Keeton


September 24, 1920 - August 22, 2011


Gordon Raymond Keeton was born September 24, 1920, in Sioux City, IA, to Floyd and Marie (Hoffman) Keeton. His family moved to Sioux Falls where he graduated from Washington High School in 1939. He served in the US Army in California as a control tower operator during World War II. On June 18, 1944, he married Jean Baker in Sioux Falls. He graduated from South Dakota State University in 1949, with a degree in Animal Husbandry. Prior to coming to Mitchell he was a federal government meat inspector at Morrells Packing in Sioux Falls. On January 21, 1975, he married Elda Pontow in Mitchell. For 35 years, he was owner and operator of Dethlefs Flowers in Mitchell. He was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, a 50 year member of the Elks Lodge and a member of the American Legion for 52 years.

He is survived by his wife Elda, one son, Dick Keeton and wife Elizabeth of Fergus Falls, MN, one daughter, Nancy Muller and husband Mark of Topeka, KS, one step-son, Bruce Pontow and wife Roxanne of Columbus, Ne, two step daughters, Jan Weber and husband Ed of Mitchell, Karla Olson and husband Gary of Woonsocket, eleven grandchildren, and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his first wife Jean, one brother and his parents.  

A Memorial Fund has been established to the Holy Spirit Catholic Church  or to the John Paul II Elementary School.
