Margaret K. Zard was born in Mitchell, SD, to Anthony and Catherine (Moran) Kelly on June 13, 1918. She attended Notre Dame Academy and graduated from Mitchell Senior High School.
Following graduation, Margaret was employed by Farm Credit Bureau, Omaha, NE, and later as a hog buyer for Hormel’s in Mitchell. Prior to her marriage, she began working for the Milwaukee Railroad, and continued her work in the Trainmaster/Roadmaster’s Mitchell office until the depot closed in the early 1980’s.
Margaret was united in marriage with James Walter Zard at Holy Family Catholic Church on October 6, 1947. They lived for a short time in Mt. Vernon, SD, and then moved to Mitchell. Margaret and Jim were blessed with three children, all daughters.
Margaret and Jim raised cattle, and after Jim’s death in 1968, Margaret and her daughters continued managing the farm, raising and showing registered sheep as well as registered quarter horses.
Margaret was a 4-H Leader for many years, and served on the 4-H Leaders State Advisory Board. She was a member of both the SD and National Dorset and Suffolk Breed Associations, and a member of both the SD and American Quarter Horse Associations. She was a lifetime member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Holy Family Altar Society, and held district offices in Catholic Daughters of America.
Until she started losing her vision, Margaret was an avid seamstress, enjoyed playing bridge and going to the Queen of Peace Wellness Center. And until her recent illness, Margaret continued managing the farm. Her greatest joy was being with her family—going on trips with her daughters, playing and visiting with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, along with having the family together for holiday and birthday celebrations.
Margaret is survived by her daughters, all of Mitchell: Mary Kay Jorgensen, Margaret Anne Zard, and Patty (Dave) VerSteeg; her grandchildren: Anne Jorgensen, Dell Rapids, SD, Katie (Barclay) Kreth, Mt. Vernon, SD, Catherine VerSteeg and John VerSteeg, both of Mitchell; her great-grandchildren: Matthew Jorgensen and William Kreth; sisters-in-law: Grace Kelly and Joy Zard; and nephew; Gary Zard.
