Mavis Arlene Puetz

January 7, 1931 - September 8, 2013

Mavis Arlene Peart Puetz was born January 7, 1931 at Mitchell, SD to Harry Hillard and Henrietta Fredericka (Koepke) Peart.   As a youngster, she grew up and attended school in Letcher and Mitchell.  Mavis later attended nurses training at St. Mary’s School of Nursing in Pierre, where she received her Licensed Practical Nursing credentials.

On January 20, 1955 Mavis was united in marriage with George William Puetz in Mitchell.  The couple lived in Arkansas and Texas while George completed his military duties, and returned to South Dakota to make their home in Ethan, SD.  There they raised their family of two girls and four boys.  Mavis worked as an LPN in various South Dakota communities, including Pierre, Parkston, Mitchell and New Underwood, and also during their time in Texas.  She later devoted her life’s work to being a fulltime homemaker and mother.

Mavis was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church of Ethan where she belonged to the Altar Society and had also served as president for a year.  She was active in the Davison County Democratic Party and worked for many years as a poll worker.  For a period of time, Mavis was a representative for the Avon Company, and had quite an extensive collection of their Cape Cod dishes and collectibles. They remained in Ethan until November of 2011 when they moved to Britton, SD to be closer to family.  Declining health made it necessary for Mavis and George to move to Spruce Court Assisted Living Center in Britton in March of 2013.

Although her six children kept her busy, Mavis also found time to have fun.  She and George were excellent dancers and attended nearly every dance that was held in Ethan.  Her short stature made it necessary for her to wear extremely high heels, which most people would find impossible to wear dancing, but not Mavis.  She could dance all night in high heels, often times in a pair of “slides” that didn’t even have backs on them! Her love of music was passed on to her children, and Saturday morning cleaning chores were lightened when Mavis would crank the stereo up and everyone would pitch in a clean to the energetic beat of the music.  Family always came first to Mavis, but a very close second was a good shopping trip!

Mavis was a good cook and loved having her family fill her dining room table.  She greatly enjoyed having them home, especially for the holidays.  Birthdays of her children, grandchildren and friends were very important, and Mavis had a keen memory for keeping all of the dates straight.  One summer, between her children and her husband, Mavis had six different teams that she followed.  Deer hunting also meant days of preparation on Mavis’ part in getting the lunches ready, with orange donuts being her much anticipated annual specialty!

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband of 58 years, George Puetz of Britton, SD; her children: Pam (Terry) Price of Britton; Stephen (Gail) Puetz of Dover, PA; Linda (Jeff) Weppler of Sioux Falls, SD; Curt (Julie) Puetz of Brookings, SD; Greg (Angelica) Puetz of Fontana, CA; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandson; two sisters-in-law: Ericka Peart of Shadow Hills, CA; Maxine Peart of Mitchell; and a brother-in-law, Pat Metoyer of Whittier, CA.

Preceding her in death were her parents, a son, William Scott Puetz; two grandchildren, three brothers: Arland Peart, Donald Peart and Wendell Peart, and two sisters: LaVonne (James “Jim”) Thompson and Joan Metoyer.

Our thoughts and prayers are with your family at this time of loss. Your mother was such a special lady and had such a big smile. May God Bless your family now and in the days to come.

Steve, Gail and family,
We are at a loss for adequate words to express our sadness for you. We had the blessed opportunity of knowing your mother and we know heaven just received one of the most special angels. You are a reflection of your mom in the way you treat people with respect and empathy. Not to mention the way you make each person fell loved. At times like these it is best to lean on your faith and your friends. We know this is a very difficult time for you and you are handling it like a true champion. Being there for your family is something you always made a priority. We want you to know that we are here for you and have two strong shoulders for you to lean on when the time comes. We are truly sorry for the loss of your mother. .

God Bless,

Dear George and family,
I am so sorry for your loss. Mavis was such a spunky, straight forward, kind person. She always made time to stop to visit withe me about my family when I was back in Ethan. She had such a vibrant laugh. Mavis saw the humor and light part of the situation. I truly loved her. Know you are in my heart and prayers. Take care.
