Obituary

Lowell “Bud” Smith, 96, of White Lake, SD, passed away Saturday, February 10, 2024, at Tieszen Memorial Home in Marion, SD. Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM on Friday, February 16, at Trinity Lutheran Church in White Lake. Burial will be at South Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Sioux Falls. Visitation will be Thursday from 5-7:00 PM with a 6:30 PM prayer service at Trinity Lutheran Church in White Lake. Arrangements by Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Lowell Harold Smith, better known as “Bud”, was born August 3, 1927, to Clifford and Anna (Richter) Smith in Dixon, SD. He attended country school through 8th grade in Dallas, SD, and graduated from Dallas High School. Bud served in the US Army during the Korean War in Mannheim, Germany, from May 1953 to May 1955. His army medals and awards included Sharp Shooter, Marksman Carbine, M1 Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Army of Occupation Medal (Germany), and Good Conduct Medal.

On June 26, 1960, he married Linda V. Kierstead in Gregory, SD, where they made their home. They moved to Stickney, SD in February 1961 and lived there until December 1976. During this time, they had two children. Their next move was to White Lake in 1977. Bud’s career consisted of managing farmer’s cooperatives until he retired in 1993. In these communities, he served on church councils, was president of church boards, mayor, fire chief, town board member, delivered Meals on Wheels, and was a lifetime member of the VFW and American Legion. Bud and Linda were members of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Stickney and Trinity Lutheran Church in White Lake. They moved to Tieszen Memorial Home in Marion in October 2023.

Blessed for sharing in his life are his wife of nearly 64 years, Linda; daughter, Lynnette (Roland) VanDerWerff of Sioux Falls; son, LeRay (Laura) Smith of Bixby, OK; grandchildren/great-grandchildren: Nicole and Josh Grady (Abigail) of Concord, MA, Shelby and Troy Anderson (Evan, Hailey, and Alexis), Levi Smith and Lijah Smith both of Bixby, OK, and Melissa VanDerWerff (Eleanor) of Fergus Falls, MN; brother, Donald (Rosie) Smith of Gregory, SD; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Matthew; six brothers: Glenn, Marvin, Gerald, Clair, Robert, and John; and four sisters: Mildred, Lois, Carolyn, and Catherine.
