Obituary

Berniece Sellars, 96, of Mitchell, SD, died Saturday, June 25, 2022, at her home under hospice care. Funeral services will be 3:00 PM Friday, July 1, at Bittner Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Servicemen’s Memorial Cemetery in Mitchell. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral service. Arrangements by Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Berniece C. Sellars was born June 5, 1926, to Bernard and Mae (Bruner) Brown in Armour, SD. She attended school in Armour, until her family moved to Mitchell where she graduated from Mitchell High School. She then began employment as a bank teller at Commercial Bank in Mitchell.

Berniece began playing saxophone high school and joined the Mitchell City Band where met her future husband. Berniece married Arleigh V. Sellars on June 8, 1947 in Mitchell. Berniece played in the band for 68 consecutive years.

After marrying Arleigh, Berniece worked with him at Sellars Music Store for several years, later returning to a career in banking as a loan officer at Mitchell Home Savings and Loan, later known as, Metropolitan Bank in Mitchell. She later worked for Reginal Martin Insurance Agency.

Berniece was a longtime member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Berniece is survived by her sons, Richard of Yankton, Donald of Sioux Falls, and James of Rapid City, and two grandchildren, Christopher Sellars of Los Angeles, CA and Stephanie Blue of Denver, CO.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arleigh, and her parents, Bernard and Mae.

My mom graduated high school with Berniece and always thought so much of her. They planned several class reunions together. My deepest sympathy to the family.

So sorry to hear of Bernice's passing. Remember her well sitting with my dad in the City Band sax section, as well as sitting in the crowd while Arleigh and I played in dad's dance band in the 60's. Great lady!

I worked with Bernice at Mitchell Home Savings and Loan and later at Metropolitan Federal Bank. She was a great lady and taught me alot. May God comfort you and your family in this time of sorrow.
