Obituary

Brett Nicholson, 63, of Mitchell, SD, died Thursday, February 24, 2022, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Friday, March 4, at Bittner Funeral Chapel with a visitation one hour prior. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell. Arrangements by Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Brett Keith Nicholson was born in Mitchell, SD on February 14, 1959 at Methodist Hospital to Keith and Donna (Rayher) Nicholson. He was raised in Mitchell and attended Mitchell High School, and graduated in 1977. Brett attended Mitchell Vocational Technical Institute earning his welding degree.

Brett worked alongside his brother, Kevin, and his dad for Sheesley’s Plumbing and Mitchell Plumbing.  Over the years, Brett extended his craft becoming a journeyman, and had been working for Krohmer Plumbing for the past 20 years where he met some amazing friends that were VERY generous, and he was grateful for their kindness and generosity.

Brett enjoyed being with family and friends, hunting, watching football, and cheering on the Raiders and cheering against the Vikings, trying his luck with scratch-off tickets, and drinking his Bud Select…. But the love of his life was his son, Rayce. You would find Brett in the stands at Rayce’s football games beaming with pride.

Brett was rarely seen without a flannel shirt, sunglasses, and a baseball cap. However, Brett was best known for his distinct and unique voice, often imitated, but never duplicated.

Brett is survived by his son, Rayce Nicholson; bonus son, Cole Gustafson; siblings: Brenda McPeek, Kevin (Jeanne) Nicholson, Mary (Steve) Johnson, Bartt (Jan) Nicholson, Jean Nicholson, and Kris (Jason) Burmeister; brothers-in-law, Steve Gordon, Steve Troglia, and Mark Schroeder; 15 nieces and nephews, 10 great-nieces and nephews and 2 on the way; and his “special lady friend” Sue Dice and his continued friendship with Rayce’s mother Kim Schaefer.

Brett is preceded in death by his parents, Keith and Donna; sisters, Correne, Kathy, and Denise; and his grandparents.

My condolences to family and friends. Brett and I had a lot of laughs in highschool before going our own way in the world where I became his sister Denise's neighbor south of Alexandria for many years before cancer ended her life. Sorry and sad to have lost them both. Rest in Peace friends.

Brett was always a friend. We were both on the East 4th group of kids that played together. We only lived 1/2 block from each other and he is in many memories of my childhood. It won't seem like the school reunions without him. All my blessings to Brett's family and friends.
