Obituary

Christopher Eric Sindt, known to his friends as “Fifty,” of Michell, SD, passed away at his home in Mitchell, SD, on February 15, 2026, at the age of 55, due to complications of diabetes.

Christopher Sindt was born in Lafayette, Indiana, to Jack and Andie (Harmes) Sindt. During his childhood, he lived in Pickstown and Armour, South Dakota, and Atkinson, Nebraska, where he attended a small country schoolhouse through the fourth grade. In 1980, the family moved to Mitchell, SD, where Chris grew up and built many lifelong friendships.

Chris learned the value of hard work at an early age, while working alongside his father in the family business, Sindt Construction, installing rural water lines throughout South Dakota. That work helped spark a lifelong career in the trades. At 18, Chris moved to Colorado, where he began a plumbing apprenticeship. After completing college, he became a journeyman plumber and was soon promoted to foreman for a large company in Denver. His skill and dedication were well respected, and he was asked by the Union to teach plumbing students at the same college he attended.

Chris eventually returned home to Mitchell, where he worked for Krohmer Plumbing from 2003 until 2023, when ongoing health challenges forced him into early retirement. Chris had a generous heart and a curious mind. He was the kind of person who would drop everything to help someone in need. He was also known for his stubborn streak and his endless curiosity about how things worked, often taking things apart simply to learn.

Chris loved the outdoors and was always drawn to adventure, especially in the Colorado mountains. He loved hiking, skiing, snowmobiling, mountain biking, camping and fishing. But above all else, Chris loved being a father. His greatest joy in life was time spent with his two sons, Dustin and Randy. One of their favorite traditions was spontaneous road trips. They would pile into Chris’s truck, and he would tell the boys to point in any direction. They would drive until they found the perfect place to pitch a tent and spend the weekend exploring the outdoors together.

Chris taught his boys to work hard, take pride in what they do, and appreciate the world around them. He was incredibly proud of Dustin and Randy and loved them more than anything.

Chris will be remembered for his kind heart, adventurous spirit, and the deep love he had for his family and friends. The memories he created with those around him will continue to live on in the stories shared and the multiple lives he touched.

Chris is survived by his beloved mother, Andie (Harmes) Sindt; sons, Dustin and Randy; sister, Jackie Sindt; nephew & niece, Austin Sindt and Kylie Lindersmith; aunts & uncles, Eileen Harmes, Bill and Gayle Harmes, Jim & Judy Sindt; cousins, Dawn Parola, Scott, Brent & Ryan Harmes, Jill Schermerhorn, Tara Yuen, Paul Sindt; long-time friends, Denise and Brenda.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jack Sindt; grandparents, Allen & Adeline Harmes, Gertrude & Erwin Sindt; Uncle Steve Harmes, Aunt Kay Harmes; and his faithful companion, Harley.

Oh Andie and Jackie, I am so sorry for your loss. I remember Chris when he was just a young guy and hanging out with my boys. Our families go back quite a few years because you were my neighbor girl watching our brothers shoot hoops in the back yard. Sending love and prayers and hugs. May Chris rest in peace..
