Obituary

DeWayne "Winky" Baumgart, 74, of Mitchell, SD, passed away Saturday, October 14, 2023, at his home. Funeral services will be 11:30 AM Wednesday, October 18, at Harvest Community Church in Mitchell. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral service. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell. Arrangements by Bittner Funeral Chapel.

DeWayne Joseph Baumgart was born December 17, 1948 to August and Alice (Dickson) Baumgart in Mitchell, SD. He attended Notre Dame High School in Mitchell and Mitchell Public Schools.

On January 17, 1970, DeWayne was united in marriage to Rita James, and to this union, five children were born.

Winky worked for Yellow Freight for 25 years and helped manage Rita’s LLC. His hobbies included drag racing and fishing. He enjoyed working on race car engines with his four sons.

Winky is survived by his wife, Rita; three sons, Tyler (Amy) of Parkston, Brad (Susan) of Lennox, and Brian (Brea) of Mitchell; daughter, Kristie “Tootie” (Basil) Wagner of Summerset, SD; 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; brothers, Denny (Jan) and Dale (Cherrie); sisters, Irene Hohn and Karen Berg; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son Bobby, parents, two brothers, six sisters, five nephews, and four nieces.

Rita, just learned of Winky's passing. Thank you to you and Winky for raising such a great family that always made you feel welcome into your home. They didn't learn that by mistake, They learned how you and Winky treated everyone and how you and Winky made many people feel like family. I will keep Winky and your family in my prayers.

Wasn't around Winky that much. But being part of the James Family all them years I got know Winky and the family. Rita being Aunt Rita to me.
So sorry for your loss he was a great man and a great family.
I remember stories of Winky and the truck stop.
He definitely fit the James Gang.
