Dorothy Scott, 98, of Mitchell, SD, died Tuesday, January 12, 2021 at Avera Brady Health and Rehab in Mitchell. A private graveside service was held January 21, 2021 at Victor Cemetery in rural Mt. Vernon. Family and friends are invited to attend the Celebration of Dorothy’s Life held from 1-3:00 PM Saturday, July 17, 2021 in the Bittner Funeral Chapel Community Room. Dorothy Helen Scott was born April 28, 1922 to Gabe and Emma (Wittig) Malde, in MT Vernon, SD. She attended Hopper Consolidated School. After her graduation, Dorothy attended Notre Dame Academy, where she received a 2-year teaching certificate and began teaching elementary school.
Dorothy married Henry Scott, on October 25, 1942. The couple moved to Mitchell, SD where they worked and raised their three children. Dorothy continued teaching in a one room schoolhouse, Lisbon #8, where she taught grades 1-8. Later Dorothy was hired by the Mitchell Public School System to teach sixth grade at Eugene Field Elementary School. She received her BA Degree from Dakota Wesleyan University in 1962. After her retirement, Dorothy taught GED Classes at Mitchell Vocational Technical School. Her teaching career spanned over four decades.
Dorothy was an active member of First Lutheran Church in Mitchell, SD. She was also active in her community with the Mitchell Garden Club, and the Civic Music Concert Series. She was a member of the Horseless Carriage Club for many years.
She is survived by her three children: Jean (John) Beck of Maryville, TN, Jerry (Candice Cacaro) Scott of Mitchell, SD, and Linda (Don) White of Sioux Falls, SD. She has nine grandchildren: Tom (Amity) Beck, Dave (Dena) Beck, Jennifer (Seth) Tiedeman, Natalie (Tony) Rea, Ryan (Andi) Cacaro, Brent (Kelly) Cacaro, Glenn (Lexi) Cacaro, Kent (Holly) White, Ben (Tambi) White, and one sister-in-law, Virginia Malde. Dorothy is also survived by twenty-two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her, husband, Henry Scott; parents; brother, Gene Malde; and daughter-in-law, Carla Scott.
