Obituary

Elmer Sorensen, 97, of Plankinton, SD, died Monday, December 26, 2022, at Platte Health Center. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Monday, January 2, 2023, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Plankinton. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell.  Arrangements by Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Elmer Mogens Sorensen, was born December 23, 1925, in rural Plankinton, SD. He was the sixth of eight children born to Danish immigrants Juul and Inger Sorensen. He grew up on a couple of different farms south of Plankinton. He attended the rural Mullivan School through 8th grade and graduated from Plankinton High School.

Elmer was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Plankinton. He held many offices through the years, including head usher and treasurer. He served on the Pleasant Lake Township board and was active in the VFW.

Elmer spent his entire life farming in Aurora County. He was also a rural mail carrier for almost 30 years. He served in the US Army in Korea from 1950 to 1952.

He was united in marriage to Nancy Loevinger on October 24, 1964 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Plankinton. He was blessed with two children, Catherine and her husband Chris of Montana and David of Minnesota. He had three granddaughters, Sarah, Lydia, and Hannah, all of Montana as well as four great-grandchildren, Ryder, Olivia, Creedence, and Hunter.

He is survived by his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, brother-in-law Richard (Jeanette) Loevinger, and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death are his wife, Nancy; parents, Juul and Inger; siblings, Esther, Bob, Frank, Erna, Betty, Lorraine, and Mildred; brothers-in-law, Arnie, Clayton, Tony, Jim, and Syl; father and mother-in-law, Frank and Louisa; and niece, Gail.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Aurora-Brule Nursing Home for a new piano.

Elmer was a second Dad to me…. And had the best and dryest sense of humor ever!!! I’ll always remember ‘General Custer’s Saddle’ that he ‘left’ with Elmer on his way west! And the uniform he wore hunting wild animals in Africa… which strangely resembles his Korean War uniform! So many great memories that we will carry with us always. Hugs to you both Kate & David.

Elmer was a special member of our family, one of us. We enjoyed so many fun times with him sharing memories & he would always start laughing before he finished the story. He was so much like our Dad is so many ways, love the memories!.

Elmer was everything everyone has said about him & more. As Elmer used to tell me "I wish there was a stop button" He will be deeply missed & fondly remembered RIP Elmer

We always loved visiting with Elmer. He was a wise and kindly man, interested in everything and everyone. Never said a bad word about anyone. What a great heritage! Bless all of the family as we all remember him.
