Obituary

Please join us in celebrating the life of Gary Mebius on Friday, August 12th.  The gathering will take place outside at Mebius Nursery, 1700 North Foster. Visitation will be from 4-6:00 PM with a service at 6 PM.  A dinner will follow. Please bring a lawn chair and favorite memory.

Gary Lynn Mebius, age 75, passed away on Saturday, July 9th at the Aurora Brule Nursing home.

Gary was born on February 12th, 1947, to Herb and Ethel (Anderson) Mebius. He graduated from Gann Valley High School in 1965 and Dakota Wesleyan in 1970. Gary taught and coached in the Mitchell School District for 7 years. His love of the outdoors led him to open Mebius Nursery and Garden Center. He truly loved his business and was very proud of each and every job that he completed.

Gary’s true passion was hunting and fishing. He fostered many valuable friendships through this passion and never was short on memories or stories about each trip.

He also loved his family deeply, never missing an activity or gathering. Gary loved his trucks, boats, dogs, whiskey and diet coke, strawberry-banana smoothies, and being called the “Gann Valley Flash”.

Gary is survived by his wife, Ila; 3 children: Nicole (Eric) Palmer, grandkids Brynn and Bryce; Marc (Michelle) Mebius, grandkids Hazel and Ruby; Molly (Kevin) Weis, grandkids Maryah, Emma, Aspen, and Micah; brother, Rodney; sister, Linda; sister-in-law, Short (Larry) Larson. Gary is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his parents, in-laws Wilbur and Laverna Friesen, and many special hunting dogs.

So sad to hear of this loss. I basically grew up with Nicole and her family. I spent most weekends out at the lake with the Mebius/ Larson family. They had the best potlucks! Gary, whom referred himself to “Superman”…taught me so much. I loved his attitude about life, he disnt waste a minute, always on the go. What I will remember most about Gary is his contagious humor, laugh and how he embraced life! This is one man who truly loved being with his family. RIP Gary!

He was one of my favorite junior high teachers. I left Mitchell. I went to church with my dad when I was home. I said hi Mr. Mebius. He shook my hand and said you can call me Gary now, I'm not your teacher anymore. One of my fondest memories. Bless all of you who had him in your lives.

Gary worked for my father at the funeral home on North Main Street next to Campbell Supply that is now a bank when he was in college. . He might have lived there too and my mother thinks he was one of the college students that did live there but after all these years we are uncertain. I remember having conversation with him about it and we did a commercial for the business class that I will never forget. He taught a business class that I and many others took in junior high. He also was our track coach in high school. He was funny and fun loving and he paid me a compliment at one time that I still cherish today. I wish I could have sat with him to have a conversation about those times. Rest In Peace Gary.
