Obituary

James Arens, 90, of Mitchell, SD, died Sunday, December 18, 2022, at his home under hospice care. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Thursday, December 22, at Bittner Funeral Chapel. Burial will be at St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery in Farmer, SD. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5-7:00 PM at Bittner Funeral Chapel.

James Dale Arens was born January 9, 1932, to Matt and Angaline (Yost) Arens. Jim married Betty Lea McGee on May 15, 1951. They had two children, Pamela Filter-Trosin and Donald Arens. He worked all his life as a mechanic; working for Dicus Motors, Berry & Sons, and Western Chevrolet. Jim was also a volunteer fireman, and then became a full-time fireman in the late 70’s. Jim started his own business, Jim’s Tune Up & Below Book Auto, in the late 70’s, and closed in 2018. Jim had a passion for old cars and enjoyed street rodding. His grandchildren were the light of his life.

He is survived by his daughter, Pam (Larry) Filter-Trosin; son, Don Arens; six grandchildren, Tracy (Debi) Filter, Justin (Angel) Filter, Cory Filter (significant other Susan Hoffman), Joel (Linda) Arens, Levi Arens, and Noah Arens; and thirteen great-grandchildren.  

He is preceded in death by his wife, Betty, his parents, and sister, Patricia.

Pam and Donnie… I’m so very sorry to hear of the loss of your dad. I know this must be a hard time for you. I didn’t know your dad that well but my childhood memories of him were of a happy kind man.
