Obituary

Jon Jacobs, 64, of Mitchell, SD, died in the comfort of his home on November 2, 2024 with his wife by his side. A celebration of life will be held at later date that is yet to be determined.

Jon Jacobs was born October 9, 1960. He spent some of his childhood in California, but spent most of his young years and into young adulthood in Gettysburg, SD. Gettysburg was his home and one of his favorite places to be. He was united in marriage to Janine (Boik) Jacobs on August 10, 1985. Jon and Janine spent most of their adult life in Nevada where they raised their two children, Jaron and Jenna. Jon dedicated his life to teaching, coaching, and his family. He taught history to middle and high school students for approximately 30 years.

Jon coached many sports including basketball, golf, track, cross country, and his most beloved sport, football. He touched many lives of his students and athletes. He took the Round Mountain Knights football team to their first and only state championship victory in 1994. Jon built a close rapport with his students and athletes and many of them turned into lifelong friends. Jon and Janine moved back to South Dakota after they both retired from their teaching careers.

Grateful for having shared his life, his survivors are his wife, Janine Jacobs, (Mitchell, SD); his two children, Jaron Jacobs (Spring Creek, NV) and Jenna (Manny) Boga (Sparks, NV); his brother, Bill Hougland (Naples, FL); and his beloved wiener dog, Jinkers. He was a grandfather to Stanley Boga and had a granddaughter on the way.

Jon was preceded in death by his parents.

I've thought about Coach Jacobs many times over the years. "The last one is the best one" was a saying of his that echoed many times when life events were challenging... Encouraging us to push, thrive, and excel when we were tired and facing opposition.
I will forever be thankful for him and the positive impact he had on my life. May God show grace to coach's family.

Jon was an outstanding human being. The world is as poorer place without him in it but a better place because of the life he lived. Rest easy old friend...

You were absolutely a big influence on me from 7th grade until I graduated. I really enjoyed seeing the few times through life after school and I will always cherish the memories I have of you. You are a great man who impacted so many positively. You were stern and encouraging all at the time, and we all know I needed a stern talking too a few times. So many great memories, Thank you Coach!

To your family I am very sorry for you loss…

Jon was one of the best teachers and coach the school had during his time in Round Mountain. He was a mentor to the football players and always took the time to listen to the kids, our thought and prayers are with his family.
