Obituary

Leonard Berg, 78, of Emery, SD, passed away Monday, February 6, 2023, at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell. Funeral Services will be 10:30 AM Friday, February 10, at St. Martin Catholic Church in Emery. Burial will be in the St. Martin Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 5-7:00 PM with a scripture service at 6:30 PM at the St. Martin Catholic Church. Arrangements are with the Hettinger-Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Leonard Anthony Berg was born May 12, 1944 to Aloysius and Veronica (Marnach) Berg in Mitchell, SD. He grew up on a farm north of Emery, graduated from Emery High School in 1962, and served in the National Guard. Leonard married Joan Schulte on January 10, 1967, and they farmed together near Emery. He and Joan were active members in St. Martin’s Catholic Church.

Leonard consistently saw the good in others and was always willing to listen. You knew if you ran into Leonard, you were in store for an uplifting conversation. His coffee buddies were his second family, especially after his beloved wife passed. He loved to play cards with his grandchildren, and was somehow always on the winning team. He made sure he was connected to family and took great pride in his children and grandchildren.

Farming was his passion. If you asked him, he would say he never worked a day in his life. He actively farmed for nearly 60 years, raising livestock and grains. He loved being in the field and operating equipment, and was always willing to help out others. He did what he loved to do his entire life.

Survivors include four children, Steve (Susan) Berg, Linda Nagel (Greg), Kevin (Emily) Berg, and Gretchen Berg; eight grandchildren, Samantha Nagel, Brandon (Shayla) Berg, Lindsey Berg, Lucas (Jojo) Berg, Charlie Berg, Tommy Berg, Sadie Berg, and Holly Berg; two brothers, Eugene (Karen) Berg and Larry Berg; several brothers and sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan; parents, Veronica and Aloysius; and sister-in-law, Anita Berg.

Lenny was my older cousin by three months. I have pictures when we were youngsters togethe and classmates at ST. Martin's Parochial elementary School before our family moved to Minn. I remember him fondly for his calm demeanor and his love of family and farming. I will continue to remember him and think how time has gone by too quickly since our last Marnach reunion. God Bless Him and his family.

So sorry for your loss, Leonard was such a sweet man. He loved with his whole heart, always talked about his late wife Joan and how much he missed her. I will never forget the nights at subway talking with him. Leonard will be missed by many.

Sending love and prayers to all the family as you grieve the loss of such a wonderful man. Joan and Leonard were both such special people. In the past several years I have enjoyed Leonard’s annual calls as we catch up with Emery happenings and the latest crop reports. He will be missed by many.

So many memories--coming to the farm when we were kids and then as we became adults, the many parties and reunions. Len and Joan were always there celebrating with us. You were always so very welcoming to family coming to hunt and our children enjoyed those fall visits. Then your children and our children became friends as adults and have continued celebrating family with dinners and great conversation. We will see you in the future at our reunions in heaven. Len, give everyone a hug for us. Our thoughts and prayers are with the whole family as you go through the next sad days. Let the good memories flow and bring you peace.
