Obituary

Linda Peta, 58, of Mitchell, SD, passed away Wednesday, July 6, 2022 from Stage 4 Melanoma at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls. Visitation will be Monday, July 11, from 5-7:00 PM at Bittner Funeral Chapel. A private graveside service will be at Calvary Cemetery in Mitchell. Arrangements by Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Linda Garlean Peta was born in Watertown, South Dakota on March 3rd, 1964 to John and Barbee Wiese Kranz. Linda grew up in Watertown and graduated from Watertown High School. After high school, she moved to Rapid City where she attended Black Hills State University and then finished her schooling at Dakota Wesleyan University where she received her degree in Business Administration.

Linda met her husband and best friend, Jim Peta, while she attended Dakota Wesleyan University and they eventually wed on May 6th, 1988 and were married for 34 years. Linda owned and operated a Hallmark store from 1987 to 1997. In 2011, she started at Mitchell Telecom as a Customer Service Representative.

In 1990, Linda would receive the official title of “Mom” when she gave birth to Vincent James Peta on December 30th, 1990. Later, Jim and Linda would be blessed with their second child, Victoria Lynn Peta, on October 14th, 1997. Being a mom was Linda’s favorite title. She enjoyed watching her son play tennis, golf, and run track in middle school, and play the saxophone in the Mitchell High School Marching Band, and perform in Friend de Coup Show Choir events. She loved to attend Victoria’s dance recitals, middle school volleyball games, cheer and dance competitions in high school, and watching her perform with Friend de Coup Show Choir. Both of her children later attended South Dakota State University where Vincent graduated with his Doctorate in Microbiology and Victoria with her Doctor of Pharmacy degree.

Linda was active throughout the Mitchell community where she served as Past Presidents on the John Paul II Elementary Board of Education and ESA Sorority. Additionally, she served as Past Chairman for the Tannenbaum Ball and was a member of PEO Chapter J. Linda had a love for scrapbooking, playing with her pup, Oakleigh, spending time with friends and family, travelling from coast-to-coast, and living life to the absolute fullest. You wouldn’t ever see Linda without a smile on her face or hearing her sweet giggle. She epitomized the phrase, “live every day like it’s your last” and although her life was cut short, it was filled with wonderful memories.

Linda is survived by her husband, Jim Peta; two children, Vincent (Sioux Falls) and Victoria (Mitchell); mother, Barbee Kranz (Sioux Falls); siblings, Sue (Kevin) Garaghty of Minneapolis, MN, William (Beth) Peta of Minneapolis, MN, David Peta (Rhonda Conklin) of Gillette WY, Mary Sigman (Dennis) Zeller of Ottumwa IA, and Thomas (Pam) of Mesa, AZ; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She is preceded in death by her father, John Kranz, her mother and father-in-law Darlene and William Peta, and sisters-in-law, Jane and Marjorie Peta.

The Kranz and Peta Families would like to thank everyone for their support, kindness, and prayers during this trying time.

I am shocked and saddened to hear about Linda. I wish you peace and strength in the days to come and comfort as you recall beautiful memories of her. Linda and I went to high school together. Thanks to alphabetized seating, she often sat right behind me in class and I regularly got to hear her infectious, wonderful giggle. She was a joy!

I am so sorry for the loss of your wife and mother. I remember visiting with her at the Hallmark Store many times. She was always so positive and friendly. When Vincent and Victoria attended the Catholic Schoo I was so impressed with Linda’s willingness to put her belief in God and her faith into her children’s education. I also had the pleasure of visiting with her when she waited on me at Mitchell Telecom. She will be greatly missed by many people. Hold on tight to all of her memories.
