Obituary

Lola Hormann, 85, of Mitchell, SD, passed away peacefully, with family by her side on Friday, October 16, 2026, at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Thursday, October 22, at Bittner Funeral Chapel, with visitation one hour prior. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Mitchell.

Lola Jean Hormann was born on October 12, 1941, in Minneapolis, MN, to Calvin and Neola (Griffin) Faircloth. She grew up in Northeast Minneapolis and graduated from Thomas Edison High School. She entered the workforce after high school, where she met the love of her life, Alfred “Al” E. Hormann at Western Mineral Products. Lola and Al were united in marriage on January 28, 1961. After several years of living in Minneapolis, Lola, Al and their first child, Michael, moved to Mitchell. After their move to Mitchell, Lola worked for Randall’s grocery store as a bookkeeper for many years. While living in Mitchell, Al and Lola grew their family with two more children, Dawn and Christy.

In 1990, Lola decided to hang up her adding machine and retired to be able to be at home to take care of her first grandchild. Lola’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her greatest pride and joy. She was their biggest supporter and cheerleader, going to countless sporting and 4-H events, no matter the weather or circumstances. Lola’s family meant the world to her, and when she talked about them, a certain twinkle would appear in her eye.

Over the years, Lola filled her time with many different activities. She loved traveling, playing Bingo, bowling, reading, sewing, crossword puzzles, cross-stitching, watching all of her “shows”, spending time with friends and family, and making a trip to the casino every now and then. She was also a very charitable person - all you had to do was ask, and she would give something. Although often appearing serious, Lola also had a delightful sense of humor and a hint of sass that could bring laughter to any gathering.

Above all, Lola’s greatest legacy is the family she leaves behind. She is survived by her two daughters, Dawn (Doug) Roth and Christy (Ryan) Ayers; her six grandchildren, Shelby Hartman, Kelsee Hartman, Alex (Ali) Hartman, Andrew (Brooke) Hartman, Alex Ayers, and Elijah Ayers; her seven great-grandchildren, Carson, Lola, Addalyn, Raelynn, Peyton, Luke, and Brantley. She is also survived by her sister, Naomi (Gerald) Neuenfeldt; her brothers Cameron (Wanda) Faircloth, and Calvin “Craig” Faircloth; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

Lola was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Al; her son, Michael; her parents, Calvin and Neola; her in-laws, Edward and Regina Hormann; and her brother-in-law, Richard Hormann.

While her passing leaves an emptiness in the hearts of those who knew and loved her, her laughter and the memories she created will live on. Lola will be remembered for her strength, her generous spirit, her love of family, and that twinkle in her eye. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
