Obituary

Margaret (Marge) Schlaffman, 80, of Mitchell, SD, died peacefully Tuesday, September 27, 2022 at the home where she lived nearly all her life. A Funeral Mass will be 10:30 AM Friday, September 30, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mitchell. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Mitchell. Visitation will be Thursday from 5-7:00 PM at the Church with a 6:30 PM prayer service. Arrangements by Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Margaret Ann (Marge) Schlaffman was born February 26, 1942, in Lake Andes, South Dakota to Sylvester and Martha (Jaeger) Moneke. She moved to Mitchell at an early age and graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1960. She was an active lifelong member of Holy Family Catholic Church where she rarely missed daily mass, bible study or the rosary. Marge graduated from Presentation School of Nursing in 1963 and worked for many years at St. Joseph’s Hospital (now Avera Queen of Peace).

Marge touched many lives. She was known for her long walks and as an excellent seamstress who made countless quilts and napkins for friends and family. She loved jigsaw puzzles – and everyone she met became an important piece of the vibrant puzzle of her life. She will be best remembered as a loving caregiver for all (and for her cinnamon rolls).

Marge was a loving wife to Gary Schlaffman for 56 years and mother to Ann Schlaffman, Mark Schlaffman, and Susan (Justin) Ebert. She was a doting grandmother to Jilian, Jackson, Jacob, and Jordon Ebert and Patrick and Eliza McHale, and a loving aunt to many nieces and nephews. She was an avid sports fan, particularly if her grandchildren were playing. She rarely missed a game.

Marge is survived by her siblings, John (Cathy) Moneke, Eugene “Gene” (Mary) Moneke, Marian “Sue” (Richard Dennis) McNeary, and Gerald “Jerry” (Susie) Moneke.

Marge was preceded in death by her parents, her parents-in-law, Elsie and Art Schlaffman, brother-in-law James Schlaffman and sister-in-law Beverly Neuheisel.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Holy Family Catholic Church or John Paul II Elementary School.

So sorry for your loss Gary and family. I knew Marge by my affiliation with her brother Gene whom I graduated with in 1962. Came over to the farm when Gene and I were growing up and played Basketball upstairs in the barn. The Nicest family God ever put on this planet--Never saw any Moneke that didn't smile a lot-God Bless all of you!

I still have, and will never forget a letter Marge sent to my head nurse when I was a brand new LPN & had admitted her aunt to St. Joe's in 1979. She took the time to express her appreciation for what she thought was outstanding care. It meant so much to me. She was one to take the time, make the effort, and lead by example. I was grateful for the opportunity I had to meet her. Godspeed Marge!

I'm so sorry to learn about Marge. When the kids rode the school bus they were the last ones to get off. So Marge met me at the highway. If I could, sometimes I'd let the kids get off first. Marge would thank me with some goodie she had made. What a wonderful ladie!!!

Many of my happiest elementary school memories include Marge. As one of our "room moms", Marge never missed classroom celebration. She could be counted on to arrive at the classroom door with a big smile and a festive treat. (I was especially fond of her cupcakes!) Thanks for sharing your mom with us, Mark, Suzie, and Ann. She was a gem!

Not all that long ago, we had an occasion to have gotten together three times, and on each she stayed a couple hours. The last of which she brought me a John Deere kleenex holder and a set of napkins. I will so cherish them, but so much more will be those three visits. I wish I could remember when I first met her, but it would have been in the early 70s. Her smile never changed, her demeanor always so pleasant and her faith never wavered. Well done good and faithful servant. Now rest in the arms of the lord. He has always been your rock.
