Obituary

Marjorie Goldhammer, 78, of Mitchell, SD, died peacefully, Thursday, November 13, 2025, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls after a long struggle with congestive heart failure, the same day our mother passed away thirteen years ago. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Friday, November 21, at Resurrection Lutheran Church in Mitchell. Burial will be at Mt. Vernon Cemetery in Mt. Vernon, SD. Visitation will be Thursday from 5-7:00 PM at Bittner Funeral Chapel with a 6:30 PM prayer service.

With Margie’s passing, the world has lost a sweet soul and a pure heart.

Marjorie Clarice (Scott) Goldhammer was born the third of six children on February 7, 1947, in Mitchell, SD. They lived in Mt. Vernon, a small town that, in the 1950s, was an idyllic place to grow up and play freely among her five siblings alongside many close friends and neighbors up and down the alleyways. The whole town was their playground, where they could walk the short, one block to the main street for grocery store errands or a visit to the drug store soda fountain.

Margie and Delmar Goldhammer were united in marriage on September 12, 1970, at Zion Lutheran Church in Mitchell, and they resided there thereafter. They spent nearly fifty years together, enjoying country music concerts, antique auto shows, car trips, and cruises.

She was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran and confirmed at Salem Lutheran, both in the Mt. Vernon area. She graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in 1965 and completed another year at Wessington Springs Academy in Wessington Springs, SD, in 1966.

Margie loved her job for over fifty years at the Scott Supply parts counter. She was popular among the customers, and they would often request her to wait on them. She had a great memory and could rattle off the long number sequences of some of the parts she sold. She remembered phone numbers, dates, and addresses when most of us would have to look them up.

Those who knew Margie fondly remember her cheerful sweetness and genuine interest in others. When asked how she was feeling, even on bad days, she would reply with, “Gettin’ along” or “Fair to middlin’”. Later in life, whenever one of us would accompany her to waiting rooms at doctors’ offices or eating at Perkins, people would remember her from Scott Supply or church and stop to visit.

Some of the best memories are those of visiting Grandpa and Grandma Schlund’s farm, fishing and picnics at Firesteel Creek, stopping at the Mt. Vernon Scott Supply shop for a nickel from Daddy on the way home from school, annual family trips to the Black Hills, and the many pets we shared.

She delighted in her many nieces and nephews as she watched them grow into adulthood. She always asked about them and loved them when they visited.

Left to share Margie’s memory are her five siblings: Robert (Sharon) of Mitchell, Janet Scott, Mary Ellen (Paul) Connelly, Joan (Pat) Cannon, John (Deb) Scott of Sioux Falls, and sister-in-law, Glenda Goldhammer Mikuska and family.

Her extended family includes thirteen nieces and nephews: Chris (Tehra), Dave (Bryn), Nick (Kara) and Rob (Jolene) Scott; Alex (Mandra) and Sam (Shelley) Connelly, Liz (Matt) Satter, Suzie (David) Munce, and Maggie (Jeff) Oliver, Sara (Emiel) Gregor and Patrick Cannon, Mike (Nicole) Scott and Kara (Nick) Shawd, and aunts and uncles Elaine Erickson and Lois (Delvin) Feistner, and many cousins, grand nieces and nephews.

Margie was preceded in death by her husband, Delmar Goldhammer; parents, Wallace and Gladys Scott; grandniece, Elle Scott; sister-in-law, Judy Goldhammer; aunts and uncles, Marian and Clyde Taplin, Lila and Kenneth Walker, Milton Scott, Bill and Bonnie Schlund, and James Erickson.

The family expresses many thanks for the care these staff gave to our sister, Margie, at Countryside Living, Avera Brady in Mitchell, Avera Prince of Peace, and Avera Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Memorials in Margie’s name may be directed to Mitchell Food Pantry and Feeding South Dakota.

I met Marge when I visited my mom at Countryside Living.
We would play Skip-Bo, Bingo and Left Center Right.
Marge always had a smile on her face and was such a kind, sweet lady. May she rest in peace.
