Mary Doorn, 93, of Mitchell, SD, formerly of Emery, SD, died Sunday, August 2, 2026, at Edgewood Memory Care in Mitchell. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Thursday, August 6, at First Reformed Church in Mitchell, with visitation one hour prior. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell.
Mary Ellen (Noteboom) Doorn was born December 7, 1932, in Corsica, SD, to John and Nellie (VandenBerge) Noteboom. She grew up and attended school in Corsica, graduating from high school in 1950. She later attended Southern State College in Springfield, SD. She taught country school in the Alexandria, SD area and in Emery.
On December 17, 1954, she married Lowell Doorn in Corsica. They resided in Emery where Lowell worked with his father at Shanard Elevator. Mary worked along with him as bookkeeper until retiring in 1994.
In retirement, Mary and Lowell worked part-time delivering Pioneer seed for Roger Klock. They loved the time spent with their children and grandchildren. They enjoyed camping throughout South Dakota and wintered in Weslaco, TX until Lowell passed away in 2007. They were members of the Grace Reformed Church in Corsica, First Baptist Church in Emery, and the First Reformed Church in Mitchell. Mary was a member of the Women’s Missionary Fellowship, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Senior Citizens.
Mary is survived by her children, Pam (Kevin) Janssen of Emery, LeAnn (Greg) Dix of Sioux Falls, and Kevin (Julie) Doorn of Mitchell; grandchildren, Tayler (Austin) Gross, Elliott (Morgan) Dix, Micah (Dominique) Dix, and Michael Doorn; great-grandchildren, Ebbie Dix, Crew Dix, Page Dix, and Campbell Gross; brothers, Gene (Phyllis) Noteboom of Wagner and Doug (Carol) Noteboom of Sioux Falls; sister-in-law, Carol Doorn of Sioux Falls; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lowell; her parents; and sisters, Lois Fisher, Leona VanRoekel, Ruth Bailey, and Judy VanderPol. Also passing before Mary were brothers-in-law, John VanRoekel, Francis Fisher, Mark Ericksen, Richard Bailey, Marv VanderPol, Melvin Door, and Rowen Doorn.
