Obituary

Matthew Nolan, 55, of Delmont, SD, passed away Sunday, September 14, 2025, at Avera Brady Health and Rehab in Mitchell. Services are pending under the direction of Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Matthew Raymond Nolan was born in Smithville, Missouri on August 6, 1970, to Gwenda (Star) Ogden Smith and William (Sonny) Nolan.

Matthew lived his childhood years in Alpena, Arkansas where he attended school at Alpena Elementary and Alpena High School. He enjoyed fishing, swimming, jumping from a rope into the lake and mostly spending time with family and friends. In 1990, Matt moved to Gregory, SD. Then on June 9, 1995, Matt married Michelle (Mahrt) Nolan, and to the union two children were born, Tiffany and Taylor.

Matt spent his days working as a welder, doing construction all across the United States, camping, fishing, and remodeling his home. 

Matt is survived his wife Michelle Nolan of Delmont, SD; children: Preston Nolan of Sioux Falls, SD, Alicia Nolan of Tulsa, OK, Tiffany French of Ethan, SD and Taylor Olsen of Mt. Vernon, SD; mother, Star Smith of Gregory, SD; grandchildren: Micheal Nolan, Josie Nolan, Bently French, Haley French, Annabelle Nolan, Jasper Nolan, and Anastasia King; and siblings, Rebecca Prickett of Mitchell, SD, Stephanie Smith of Huron, SD, and Gary Smith Jr. of Gregory, SD. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Victor Nolan; father, Gary Smith; paternal grandparents, Charles and Blanche Smith; maternal grandparents, Raymond and Mary Ogden; his dad the late William Nolan; and many uncles and aunts.

He will always be loved and missed by all his friends and family.

I'm so sorry for your loss I will always remember Matt as the larger life guy I have alot of memories from my younger years of Matt and my brother Mike where there was one the other was not far behind
