Melvin Leonard Schlimgen was born July 5, 1938. He was the oldest of four children born to Clarence ‘Dick’ and Regina (Kurtenbach) Schlimgen. He graduated from Parkston High School and due to the sudden death of his father, took over the family farm. With the guidance of his Uncle ‘Lefty’ Leonard Schlimgen, raised his three siblings through college.

Melvin married Doris Haiar on October 6, 1959 at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Farmer, South Dakota. Together they resided on the family farm west of Dimock and raised a family of seven children. Melvin was an active player for the Dimock baseball team for many years and in 2017, Melvin was inducted into the South Dakota Baseball Hall of Fame. He and his family were very proud of his accomplishment. His passion was attending ballgames whenever the farm schedule allowed. His faith was a large part of his life and he attended Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Dimock, South Dakota where he and his family were actively involved. Melvin was involved as a member of the Knights of Columbus and church board. He dedicated time to the Starr township board and served on the Dimock Farmers Elevator board for many years. Melvin also proudly served in the Army National Guard.
