Obituary

Merle Seeman, 88, of Emery, SD, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away Sunday, September 14, 2025, at Avera Queen of Peace in Mitchell. Services are pending under the direction of Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Merle Edward Seeman was born February 12, 1937, to LeRoy and Mary (Stevens) Seeman in Huron, South Dakota.

Merle proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy from February 1955 to 1958, enlisting just after his 18th birthday. Soon after returning home, he met the love of his life, Colleen, on July 27, 1957. They married five months later, on December 27, 1957. They went on to share nearly 69 wonderful years.

Merle was a man who loved to work and could truly do anything. Merle held many jobs throughout his life, but he was especially proud of his years as plant manager at Huron Manufacturing. That role took him across the world to Iran, Spain, Brazil, and beyond. It fed his lifelong passion for traveling and meeting new people. In 1978, he and his family moved to Wyoming, where he supported the giant machines of Wyodak Coal Mine. Merle was, in his family’s words, “a jack of all trades and a master of all.”

Merle’s happiest moments were spent with his family and his many animals. He adored his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandsons, and he shared his home and heart with countless beloved pets over the years.

Merle loved and was loved by all who knew him. His boundless optimism, quick smile, and can-do spirit will continue to inspire everyone blessed to have been part of his extraordinary life.

Merle is survived by his devoted wife, Colleen; their five children: Tracy Costello, Kelly (David) Martin, Roy Seeman, Eric (Michalene) Seeman, and Merle “Tony” (Mara) Seeman; 16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandsons; and his sister-in-law Shannon Troy.

He is preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Vince, Dale, Lyle, Charles “Buzz,” Dick, and Larry; sister, Lois Anderson; as well as numerous cherished dogs and cats.
