Obituary

Nelle Funk, 104, of Mitchell, SD, passed away Friday, October 7, 2022, at Avera Brady Health and Rehab in Mitchell. Funeral services will be 12:00 PM Tuesday, October 11, at Bittner Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Mt. Vernon Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 5-7:00 PM at Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Nelle Funk was born July 28, 1918 to A.H. (Hans) and Libbie (King) in Mt. Vernon, SD. She grew up there, and graduated from Mt. Vernon High School, Dakota Wesleyan University, and Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Mitchell, SD. She received her Master’s degree from SDSU when she was 60 years old. 

She married Richard W. Funk on February 14, 1944.

She was employed as a Nurse/Teacher for 10 years at Methodist Hospital and 12 years at Dakota Wesleyan University. 

She was a member of the Methodist Church, UMW, Nurses Alumni, Legion Axillary, So Sew Club, and Sr. Citizens.

Nelle is survived by her four children, David (Gail) of Aberdeen, SD; Tom (Sue Weaver) Gallup, NM; Becky (Scott) Kangas, Omaha, NE; and Mary (Loren) Merchant, Herriman, UT; 18 grandchildren; and 30 great Grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1990; her parents in 1959 and 1928; special aunt Ethel Williams in 1948; two infant sisters in 1920 and 1928; grandson Yancy Funk in 2013; and two cousins Don Williams and Florence Althen in 2021.

In lieu of flowers, memorial may be directed to the Mitchell United Methodist Church.

Mrs Funk was my nursing instructor at DWU in 1974-75! She was always kind & helpful. What a full long life! RIP

Such a nice lady, my mother always thought a lot of Nellie. She lived a very full life, and accomplished so much. My thoughts are with your family.

She was the youngest older person I’ve ever met! The last time I visited her which was abou 6 months ago, she beamed like she was 35. Loved that lady

Nelle was such a sweet person. She was my professor at DWU, but got to enjoy her so much more at church
