Dates
December 17, 1949 - October 11, 2026Obituary
Peggy Kelley, 76, of Mitchell, SD, died Sunday, October 11, 2026, at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls. Visitation will be Monday, October 19, from 12:00-2:00 PM at Bittner Funeral Chapel. Private burial will be at Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell.
Peggy Kelley was born in Wessington Springs, SD, to Henry and Leola Wenz. She grew up on a nearby farm and graduated from Lane High School. Her working career began at the State Capitol for the Veterans Administration. During those years, she had two sons, Chad and Darin Nemec. They eventually moved to Mitchell, where Peggy worked at New Holland Implement and Dakota Mental Health.
Later in life, she and her husband, Harvey Kelley, bought two campgrounds and built a C-store in Deadwood. They also had farmland in the Mitchell area. Peggy loved accompanying her dad to the local sale barn to build a beautiful herd of cattle.
Peggy absolutely loved Christmas, especially the color purple, dancing, playing cards with friends at the Depot, living and entertaining at her country home, as well as joining good friends to dine out on Thursday evenings. It was those wonderful friends and family that made such an impact on her life and helped her through the tough, tough times, along with her much-loved sister, Shirley and brother-in-law, Allen; as well as sons, Chad (Yvette) Nemec and Darin (Kim) Nemec, all of Mitchell; grandchildren: Renae and Ace Nemec of Mitchell, Brandon Kelley of Colorado, Morgan and Jess Kelley of Sioux Falls, (Trevor) Nichole Warren of Sioux Falls, Teiler Eliason and Colby and Jenny Winter all of Mitchell; as well as several great-grandchildren; and nephew, Eric Richardson. Peggy also had two other people she called sister and brother, Marlene Weller and Don Roti, with whom she grew up just across Highway 281 on adjoining farms. They always stayed close through the years, with plenty of mischief accompanying those years!
With all these friends and family members, Peg shared an abundance of joy, kindness, generosity, love, and always the warmth of hearty laughter in good times and difficult. No more loyal friend could be found, and that treasured memory will forever remain.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Kelley.
