Obituary

Richard “Dick” Amdahl, 88, of Mitchell, SD, died Thursday, December 2, 2021, at Aurora-Brule Nursing Home in White Lake. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Tuesday, December 7, at Bittner Funeral Chapel. Burial will be held at 1:00 PM Wednesday, at Hope Lutheran Cemetery in Summit, SD. Arrangements by Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Richard “Dick” Roy Amdahl was born June 22, 1933, at home in Farmington Township, SD. He was the last surviving family member of eleven children to Norwegian descendant parents, Henry and Bessie (Nelson) Amdahl. Dick started grade school in 1939 at Farmington Country School, and graduated from Summit High School in 1951. 

Dick proudly served his country in the US Marine Corps.

Dick was a professional painter for over 30 years and did finish concrete work on highways and airports.

He enjoyed watching sports on TV and fishing. Dick also enjoyed gardening and flowers from childhood through adulthood. He also loved churning butter and bringing in firewood for his mother. Dick loved spending time with his siblings. 

He is survived by his significant other’s children Sharon, Darrell, Guy, and Brad, and numerous nieces and nephews 

Dick was preceded in death by his significant other, Lorraine Croucher; sisters, Hazel (Olvin) Larsen, infant Mabel Louella, Doris (Kenneth) Woodward, and Shirley Fieblecorn; brothers, Howard, Clifford, Clarence (Delores), Melvin, Dale (Ruth) Harold; and Lorraine’s son, Jerry Oswald.

Anyone who came in contact with Dick quickly found a generous and compassionate friend. Dick spent his last days In Aurora Brule Nursing Home, is a short period of time staff and residents realized that Dick was something special. He truly enjoyed the time he spent there and quickly accepted it to be his new home.

There was no lingering involved in Dick's death, as sad as it is to see a loved one go, we are all thankful that the Lord gave him peace in short order. Richard will be missed by all who knew him.

I remember dick as a kind, well likeable person to be around. I've known him for many years.

I appreciate that Dick and Grandma took me in and pointed me in right direction in life. I'll remember him for his light hearted whistling but mostly for the kindness and love he showed my father Jerry Oswald all of his life but mostly during his final years at the nursing home. Dick made sure either he or grandma were there everyday. It was not a surprise to find that it was Dick who was there when he passed. Always making sure he wasn't alone. Thanks Dick you'll be missed.
