Obituary

Susan Barrett, 66, of Mitchell, SD, passed away Sunday, August 28, 2022, at her home in Mitchell. Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Thursday, September 1, at Bittner Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell.

Susan Elizabeth Barrett was born February 9, 1956, to Leo and Mabel “Micky” (Decker) Barrett in Evanston, IL. Susie grew up and attended school in Chicago, IL. Susie enjoyed visiting museums of science and industry, parks, and the beach. She loved visiting South Dakota to see her cousin, but mostly her grandpa and grandma Decker in Carpenter on the farm. Susie then moved to Mitchell in 1985. Soon she was living on her own, driving her own car, living in her own apartment, and working her job.

Susie worked at Hardee’s part time, and then at Mitchell High School for 22 years until she retired.

Susie’s hobby was knitting, which she was very talented at. Susie had a special bond with her sister Barbara, doing things like makeup, hairstyling, and of course girl talk.

Susie is survived by her brothers, Leo Barrett Jr. (JR) of Lakeville, IL, Larry Barrett, of Spencer, and Michael Barrett of Mitchell.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Barbara Barrett.

When I began substitute teaching many yrs. ago - going through the lunch line - I asked Susan if she was the same lady that I saw walking her dog every day! She was😍. We developed a friendship right then and there! Rest In Peace, Susan.

Susan Barrett was a joy to have in our Mitchell Church the years we served in pastoral leadership there. She served effectively in a number of capacities--in the children's ministry, in food and hospitality responsibilities, and in behind-the-scenes ways. She used her talents to a high level of capacity. Her faith was very authentic. By that I mean she was genuinely honest about her relationship to God and His Church. The death of her dad was really hard on Susan. We had numerous conversations about what her faith should look like following his death. Susan struggled and finally overcame her reluctance to come back to church worship after her father's funeral at the church. She loved worship music that moved her soul. We are better people for having known Susan. God bless her memory to all of us. She will be missed. Matthew 25:40.

Awesome person I love visiting with her when I was in school as lunch lady and then at Walmart when I worked there.

Susan and I enjoyed numerous phone discussions since I left Mitchell in 2009. She always talked about Larry, Mike, and Elaine, plus her dog. Usually, she talked as much with her dog during our phone visits as she did with me. I will remember Susan as a willing servant at our local church. She served well in the kitchen and in office details. She took delight in referring to me as Waynee! She loved Jesus and we spoke of Him often in our chats. Many of us have lost a friend for a season.

Sue was a good Freind, she came to fit massages and I purchased plastic canvas projects from her that she made. She was always so proud of her work, she loved her dog and family. Great Freind. She will be missed. I met her at Wesleyan Church
