Obituary

Thomas “Gator” Gates, 75, of Mitchell, SD, passed away Monday, March 9, 2026, in Mitchell. Visitation will be Monday, March 16, from 5:00-7:00 PM at Bittner Funeral Chapel with a 6:30 PM prayer service.

Born in Mitchell, South Dakota, to Cliff and Rosemond (Callie) Gates, he built a life defined by hard work, family devotion, and infectious joy.

Growing up in the country outside Mitchell, he spent his childhood playing outdoors with his brother and sisters, surrounded by animals and the wide-open South Dakota landscape that would shape his love of the outdoors for a lifetime.

After graduating from Mitchell Senior High School, he began his career as a vending machine operator. With the entrepreneurial spirit and determination that defined him, he went on to found his own successful vending and amusement business—building something from the ground up through sheer grit and vision.

On June 12, 1971, he married the love of his life, Rita Agnitsch, in Mitchell. Their love story began at the roller rink, and together they built a beautiful life, raising three children: Tara, Jason, and Josh. His family grew to include seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, all of whom were the light of his life.

Known affectionately throughout the community as "Gator," he was a man who drew people to him with his warmth and humor. An avid outdoorsman, he found peace hunting in Murdo and West River, fishing, and tending his garden. He collected coins, restored antiques, and possessed the rare gift of being able to fix almost anything with his hands—a skill he shared generously with family and friends.

The sounds of Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Bob Seger often filled his home, the soundtrack to a life well-lived. But above all, he delighted in making his grandchildren smile and was never happier than when surrounded by family.

His great sense of humor, ready joke, and generous spirit made him beloved by all who knew him. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and a community that was better for having known him.

Tom is survived by his wife, Rita; children, Tara Gates of Kansas City, MO, Jason Gates of Las Vegas, NV, and Josh Gates of Sioux Falls; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and siblings, David Gates of Rapid City, Rita Conklin of Des Moines, IA, and Diane Gates of Rapid City.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Sending love and prayers to Rita and family; also to all of Tom’s siblings. I have so many wonderful memories of our visits to Mitchell all through my childhood. So many memories of all the cousins sleeping in the bunk beds in Aunt Rosamond and Uncle Cliff’s basement.

Sending prayers for comfort and strength as you face the difficult days ahead. I am so profoundly grateful I was able see Tom at Uncle Wally's 94 birthday party ( Uncle Jim's too). What a wonderful kind man. My Mom and I were blessed to visit Mitchell and spend time with family making beautiful memories in addition to a taking a trip down memory lane.

I remember Tom‘s whole face squinted up when he laughed. I remember that and the little shop of horrors, in the basement of their folk house out past the TV station where, in their youths, he and Dave were amateur taxidermists, trapping the creeks in the area,

He was a good brother and brother in law. He lies with quiet strength but he also made us laugh. Earth lost a good one, but heaven gained a great one.
