Obituary

Vernon Neugebauer, 92, of Mitchell, formerly of Dimock, SD, died Friday, April 8, 2022, at Avera Brady Health and Rehab in Mitchell. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Tuesday, April 12, at St. John Lutheran Church in rural Dimock. Burial will be at St. John Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 5-7:00 PM with a prayer service at 6:30 PM at Bittner Funeral Chapel in Mitchell.

Vernon Carl Neugebauer was born on July 17, 1929, in Dimock, South Dakota to Edward and Clara (Luebke) Neugebauer.

Vernon was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church (Hillside) where he was a lifelong member. He grew up on the family farm, which was homesteaded by his grandfather, Christian Neugebauer in 1880, west of Dimock, SD. Vernon walked through his pasture about a half-mile from the farm to attend school at the Baldwin #61, a one-room schoolhouse. Upon its closure, he continued his education at Ethan School through the eighth grade.

Vernon served as a Corporal in the United States Army in the Korean Conflict from 1951 to 1953. He took much pride in serving his country and was honorably discharged on July 27, 1953.

On January 9, 1955, Vernon was united in marriage to LaVerna Doering at Salem Lutheran Church in Parkston, SD. To this union, they raised four sons and a daughter on their family farm west of Dimock raising crops and livestock until his health forced him to retire in 2002. He continued to live on the family farm until he and LaVerna moved to Mitchell, SD in 2009 where he resided at Crystal Manor, Avera Brady Assisted Living and Avera Brady Health and Rehab.

Vernon served on various committees at St. John’s Lutheran Church and took pride in being a co-founder in 1953 of the annual tree trimming project which is now in its 69th year. He also served on Starr Township Board, and was a member of the Stockgrowers Association and SD Farm Bureau.

Gift-giving and thankfulness was Vernon’s love language. Many remember him gifting them handcrafted twine rugs, inspirational pocket cards, and yarn hangers.

Vernon is survived by his wife of 67 years, LaVerna Neugebauer of Mitchell; children, Bryan (Carmen) Neugebauer of Dimock, SD, Terry (Linda) Neugebauer of Bigelow, MN, LeAnn (David) Moe of Alexandria, SD, and Tracy (Charlene) Neugebauer of Parkston, SD; daughter-in-law, Christine Neugebauer of Mitchell, SD; grandchildren, Dustin (Tiffany) Neugebauer of Bigelow, MN, McKayla (Anthony) Buechler of Aberdeen, SD, Chet Moe of Alexandria, SD, Austin Neugebauer of Bigelow, MN, and Harley Neugebauer of Parkston, SD; great-grandchildren, Dyson and Kinsley Neugebauer of Bigelow, MN and Davy Buechler of Aberdeen, SD.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Clara Neugebauer; son, Kevin Neugebauer; granddaughter, Ashley Moe; brothers, Wilfred Neugebauer, Raymond Neugebauer, Lewis Neugebauer, Everett Neugebauer, and Luvern Neugebauer; sister, Lonna Neugebauer and an infant sister; parents-in-law, Renatus and Johanna Doering; sisters-in-law, Elaine M. Neugebauer, Jennetta Neugebauer, Anita Neugebauer, and Darlene Doering; and brothers-in-law, Marvin Doering, Roland Doering, and Richard Doering.
