While in Gettysburg, Virginia worked in her father's shoe & harness repair shop, also repairing canvases each summer. Virginia attended the Gettysburg school system for 10 years before the family moved to Mitchell, SD. Virginia graduated and lettered in Triple Trio from Mitchell Senior High School.

On May 30, 1949, Virginia married Gene Malde of Plankinton, SD. Together they farmed until their retirement. They had 2 sons, Brian Malde born in 1959, and Randal Malde born in 1964. Virginia worked side by side with Gene and the boys in every aspect of the farming and ranching life.

Some of her favorite things were music, dogs, and the Minnesota Twins baseball games. Virginia enjoyed making the boys’ favorite desserts when they came to visit. Coffee and desserts were available whenever friends stopped by for a visit. Virginia especially enjoyed traveling with her family on vacations.

In Virginia's last years, the family moved her to Spearfish, SD to be closer to Brian and Sheryl of Spearfish as well as Randy and Teri of Summerset. Together they celebrated Virginia's 90th Birthday, holidays, and special occasions.

We are very sorry to hear the news. We remember all the times Virginia and Gene would meet us in Mitchell to celebrate Dad Hillen's birthdays. Virginia will always be remembered for her cookies and for her cards and calls on our birthdays. We will miss her,

Brian and family, my sincere condolences on the loss of your mother. I was just looking at an old Wesleyan Women's Cookbook that has recipes from your mom and mine, among so many others in our fellowship. May she enjoy her FOREVER HOME with Jesus! God bless and comfort you all.

So sorry to hear of Virginia's passing. She was a wonderful "across the street" neighbor and I enjoyed taking treats to her and visiting. Loved talking baseball with her. She was such an avid Twins fan and I was an equally avid Chicago White Sox fan. Even after she moved, I enjoyed our phone conversations. I extend my sympathy to her family and friends. Know that she is now at peace and without pain in our Saviors hands.

Brian-So sorry to hear about your mom. I have so many fond memories of both your parents when they would come to the cafe for coffee and breakfast. Your mom was one of the kindest ladies. May you find comfort in knowing that she and your dad are setting and having coffee together again.
